Increase in recycled packaging containers

An increasing amount of packaging is being produced from recycled material. It saves resources and reduces the total quantity of waste. Sustainability is an important goal for companies in the construction sector .

Companies are looking to improve sustainability in various ways. “It’s an on-going process” shares Dino Brouwer, product manager at Forbo Eurocol, producer and supplier of construction related products. “With sustainability and re-usage the quantity of new resources is being reduced, you reduce your carbon footprint and aid in reducing the total amount of waste.

Think before you change

When making a change to improve sustainability there should always be looked at the diversity of a packaging, Brouwer continues. ”The function of packaging should be preserved. It should prevent damage to the product during transport for example. A packaging container should keep its strength.“

The latter is necessary for another reason: containers that are empty after first use, often get re-used for a secondary purpose. “A container is often given a second life in the construction sector to mix tile adhesives and grout mortars” explains Brouwer. “A container is a cornerstone on many construction sites. If a container is produced from durable material, the strength should remain at least equal to prevent the containers from breaking. If this isn’t the case the container will not be re-used and therefor actually making the container less sustainable.”

PCR Material

The search to improve durability is an ongoing process. Nowadays packaging containers can be produced from so called post-consumer recycled (PCR) waste, meaning the plastic waste of end-users and companies that can’t be re-used anymore. An example of a container produced from PCR material is from Forbo Eurocol. “We are using this container for several years now and with excellent result”, states Brouwer. “The container itself is made from 95% PCR polypropylene. The lids are not made from PCR as of yet. Due to the strength of a lid these are still produced from new and unused, so called virgin, material.
